Pakistan's commercial hub, Karachi, was closed Wednesday for a day as weeds days after the wave of violence that claimed lives of 56 people since Saturday.
Political and ethnic hostilities and war are two sides are sometimes associated with criminal groups. This complicates the creation of order in Karachi, where Pakistan's main port, stock exchanges, central banks, and the main gateway to the West side of military supplies for Afghanistan's neighbors.
The killing began on Saturday ahead of an additional election to replace a member of provincial parliament who was killed in August. The series of killings that raises concerns about the instability in the city.
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), coalition partner the government of President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan People's Party, said that some supporters were among those killed and asked for a day of mourning. Police said four people were killed in separate incidents on Wednesday after 19 people were shot and killed a day earlier. The 10 people were shot in a single attack in the area known as Sher Shah used car place and producing machine tools.
"It seems there is no government in Karachi," said Altaf Hussain, MQM leader, said in a statement delivered from exile in London. "The government has failed to protect people and infrastructure in Karachi."
The violence has led to requests from various politicians for the army entrance to Karachi for the sake of ease the violence that has killed hundreds of people this year. MQM has threatened to withdraw from the coalition Zardari. This could make the government lose the majority vote in the National Assembly or even cause the downfall when MQM joined the opposition.
Karachi contributes 68 percent of government revenue and 25 percent of Pakistan's gross domestic product.
