New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key, on Monday (13/5), welcomed the resignation of a politician who criticized the government because he was drunk harassing a waitress at a dinner party.
National Party MP, Aaron Gilmore, announced that he was quitting parliament on Sunday night. He said the impact of his actions during dinner at an exclusive restaurant in the South Island last month became too much for him. "I have made a mistake. My man," said Gilmore told reporters.
"But the attack on my integrity have started targeting the people around me and it's not fair to them."
One dining companion Gilmore, attorney Andrew Riches, said that lawmakers were protesting the waiter when he again refused to give alcohol to Gimore. According to Riches, to find that his request was denied, the board member said, "Do not you know who I am?" He then called the waitress was "a jerk". Riches said, Gilmore also threatened to ask the prime minister to fire the maid.
That prompted Riches to write an apology letter to the restaurant that his behavior was related.
Gilmore denies allegations Riches some details?? But he admits he was drunk and harassing the waitress. He said, rude and arrogant behavior.
After initially refusing to resign, he finally swallowed his own after the end of last week it became clear that he had lost the support of Prime Minister Key.
"View of the party against inappropriate behavior was quite clear from day one," Key told TVNZ.
"I think he made the right decision for himself and for his family. Pressure on Aaron (Gilmore) would be great."
Gilmore will be replaced by another member of the National Party. Thus, the position of the majority coalition in the parliament Key government has not changed.
