The U.S. military plans to use small boats as a base for launching and landing unmanned reconnaissance aircraft. U.S.
defense technology research agency (Darpa) said the United States should increase "surveillance and tracking" their air.
Unmanned aircraft (UAV) or more commonly known as drones launched from land. The launch of the sea would be more difficult because of the aircraft's fuel needs to be recharged.
Normally, ship to launch carrier aircraft is a large size with a long runway.
The latest project is called Tactically Exploited Reconnaissance Node (Tern) is taken from the name of a sea bird that has exceptional durability.
"Using small boats to launch and land the unmanned reconnaissance plane distance will expand our ability to reach dangerous areas by land or sea," said Darpa program manager, Daniel Patt.
"It's like controlling a hawk that flew into the arms of those who have the right equipment so he does not have to always go back to the same branch," he added.
Approximately 95 percent of land in the world is within reach 900 miles nautical coastline. This makes Darpa increasingly aware that the future will be more fighting going on in the ocean.
