UN Security Council on Friday (06/04/2010), approved unanimously to increase while 680 police to the mission in Haiti to help stabilize the country when the country was recovering from a devastating earthquake in January.
Which has 15 member agencies that authorize the deployment of 680 additional police as a temporary increase in capacity with clearly defined objectives and special concentration on increasing the capacity of the national police of Haiti.
The resolution states that the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) will now include a military component consisting of 8940 troops and police component consisted of 4391 policemen.
According to the resolution, the number of new MINUSTAH troops and police to be reviewed in close and permanent, including through electoral and constitutional transfer of power that follows.
Last month, the government proposed the extension of Haitian President Rene Preval term by three months if an earthquake destroyed the Caribbean country was not able to hold planned elections at the end of November.
The proposal has been sent to parliament that would allow Preval, who had been due to resign on February 7 that will come, to keep reign until May 14, 2011.
The move occurred when the plan is still dubious election in Haiti, which is still reeling from the earthquake in January that killed between 250,000 and 300,000 people and caused another 1.3 million people who do not own a house.
The Extension will not apply if the presidential election held on the last Sunday in November.
The Security Council has asked the UN mission to provide logistical support and technical expertise to assist the Haitian government's efforts to strengthen institutions of governance based on law and accelerate the implementation of the government's strategy to resettle people displaced by the earthquake.
The Board recognizes the need for MINUSTAH to assist the government of Haiti to give adequate protection to the population, mainly displaced people and other vulnerable groups like women and children.
