China to cancel a controversial ban on issuing visas for visitors from Taiwan bald amid concerns about discrimination.
Travel agents and local media reported, the rule is enforced by the city of Xiamen in south China that prohibits people go bald ask permission more than once a year, the type of permit, which is usually used by business travelers.
According to a report in the Liberty Times, which is based in Taipei, which quotes a travel agent who is not mentioned by name, and reported by the Telegraph, last weekend, authorities imposed a ban on China because of fears that it is easier for people to disguise themselves bald. However, earlier this year, the city has canceled the ban.
"This may be a problem of discrimination if the officers of Customs of China asks visitors to remove their wigs," said Roger Hsu, a spokesman for the Association of Travel Agents, Taiwan. There are no official statistics on how many people who have been rejected because they were bald.
Relations between Taiwan and China have improved significantly since Ma Ying-jeou became president of Taiwan in the year 2008, and pledged to increase trade and tourism business with China. Beijing still regards Taiwan as part of China's territory awaiting reunification process, by force if necessary. Both regions were politically separate in 1949 after a civil war.
