Climate Change Summit

Concerns Prime Minister (PM) Kevin Rudd would be the failure of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

will Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen, Danish, proved. Not long after the 52-year leader gave a warning, the climate change conference was postponed. The reason, some poor countries who feel disadvantaged withdraw from the UNFCCC.

Yesterday (14/12) The BBC reported that the delegation of poor countries outraged at Danish host tried to shift the discussion of emission reductions based on the Kyoto Protocol. Poor countries are beginning to feel the real impact of climate change requires rich countries keep the contents of the protocol. But, the countries that became the target protocol instead tend to avoid the agreement.

"Leaders Conference of the Parties (COP) tripped struggling democratic process in the meeting," pointing Lumumba In-Aping, chief negotiator G-77. COP or COP 15 is the term used to refer to the UNFCCC meeting in Danish this time. Currently believed to be the leader of the COP is the Danish Climate Minister Connie Hedegaard.

As a host who led 12-day meeting, Danish deemed too pro-rich countries. In contrast, the group of poor countries and the developing world, who benefited from the Kyoto Protocol, was ignored. In fact, the European Union (EU) and the group of developed countries already mentioned conceptualize a new agreement to replace the protocol was signed in 1997. Because of that, last week urged Tuvalu adjourned the meeting.

Since the beginning, the group of developing countries suspected of bias approach in international meetings. "African countries and the G-77 bloc obviously only want real action of the Kyoto Protocol. They are suspicious, there is already agreement prepared without their knowledge," said Kim Carstensen, director of global climate institutions in collaboration with WWF. Therefore, the protocol should be discussed thoroughly by delivery of real action.

Toward the meeting yesterday, Mr Rudd has warned that the United Nations initiated the meeting was very potentially fail. He then appealed to the developed countries involved in the meeting to adopt a more flexible approach.

"As the biggest polluters, China and India has given a positive statement. But, entering the second week, the conference seemed just a stalemate," he said.

The problem, he added, the developing countries and developed countries has yet to reach agreement.
