UN General Assembly Votes Again for a Draft Resolution on Jerusalem

The United Nations General Assembly decided to hold an emergency session on Thursday for a vote on a draft resolution rejecting US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The United Nations General Assembly decided to hold an emergency session on Thursday for a vote on a draft resolution rejecting US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The auspicious meeting was in demand from Turkey and Yemen on behalf of a group of Arab countries and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

President of the UN General Assembly, Miroslav Lajcak said on Monday (18/12/2017) night, has informed about the meeting to all representatives of 193 member countries. The agenda of the emergency meeting was taken after earlier, the US vetoed the draft resolution issued by the UN Security Council. On the initiation of Egypt, the UN Security Council issued a draft resolution to cancel the status of US recognition of Jerusalem that is considered to have no legal effect. Now, with the 193-member General Assembly, no country has the right to veto. Even by the Security Council where the US, Britain, China, France and Russia become permanent members.

"The General Assembly will say, without fear of a veto, that the international community refuses to accept a unilateral US recognition," Palestinian ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour said. President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel sparked protests across the Muslim world and came under heavy criticism.
