Galang Strikes Down Sex for President
Organization of a women's wing of the civil rights group urged the Togo women sex strike for a week demanding the resignation of the country's president.
The woman asked not to serve the husband or partner of each starting on Monday (08/27/2012), said Isabelle Ameganvi, the leader of the women's wing of Let's Save Togo. The strike will be pressure for men to act against Togo President Faure Gnassingbe.
Ameganvi, a lawyer, told the AP that his organization mimics step Liberia women who use sex strike in 2003 to campaign for peace.
"We have lots of ways to force the men to understand women's desire in Togo," Ameganvi said.
Sex strike was announced at a public meeting that followed thousands of people in Togo's capital, Lome, Saturday (08/25/2012). The demonstration was mobilized a coalition to protest the electoral reforms. According to them, the change in the electoral law to make it easier for parties Gnassingbe wins the legislative elections to be held next October.
Gnassingbe came to power in 2005, following the death of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema who ruled the country for 38 years.
Gnassingbe did not comment on the sex strike calls. Likewise his wife. Some time ago, two anti-Gnassingbe rally disbanded police used tear gas and detained more than 100 people.
At the rally race last Saturday, Jean-Pierre Fabre, leader of the opposition National Alliance for Change, demanding the resignation of Gnassingbe, while other opposition leaders called for national disobedience.
But the call sex strike that became the talk of the small country of six million people.
"It's good for us women to have sex strike for our children in jail. I believe if we do strike, they freed the child," said a mother named Abla Tamekloe. "For me, this is like fasting, and without fasting, you will not get what you want from God."
When asked whether he would agree, Tamekloe replied, "For me it's easy to implement. I'm used to, but I'm not sure my husband will accept it, but I will explain to him."
A woman Togo more willing to support the strike, but he was not sure I could do a whole week.
"I agree we women have to do it, but I know my husband would not allow me to live a full week. He may agree at first, but to my knowledge, he Takan changed outlook after last night," said Judith Agbetoglo.
"So I'm not sure I can weeklong sex strike. Because I would have a problem with him. My husband really liked it (sex)," he continued.
Although the call was attractive to women, some men, including the leaders of the parties and kelompo rights groups in an anti-Gnassingbe, was not convinced the move would be a success.
"Strike sex a week was too long," said Fabre of the National Alliance for Change. He proposed a shorter period of time.
"We did two days," he said to laughter from the protesters.
Other people respond to the call Isabelle Ameganvi with skepticism.
"It's easy for her to say because she's not married. He did not live with him," said Ekoue Blame, a journalist.
"Does he think a woman who is not her husband can do that? After all, who can arrange the couples in the house?"
